BARRIE, ONTARIO – Educators and researchers Keith Connell and Suzanne M. Connell have published a new scholarly chapter in the recently released book International Student Engagement in Post-Secondary Education, edited by Dr. Clayton Smith and published by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.

Their chapter, Canada's International Student Surge and Decline: Rethinking Pedagogy in a Changing Higher Education Landscape, examines the dramatic rise and recent decline of international student enrolment in Canada and explores the implications for higher education institutions, faculty, and students. Drawing on current research, policy analysis, and practical experience, the chapter argues that colleges and universities must move beyond enrolment management strategies and invest in culturally sustaining pedagogical practices that better support diverse student populations.

The chapter explores how faculty increasingly serve as cultural mediators in multilingual and multicultural classrooms, often undertaking significant but largely unrecognized pedagogical labour. It further examines the relationship between international student investment, institutional accountability, mental health, educational equity, and the growing need for innovative teaching practices in an era of policy uncertainty and demographic change.

"The opportunity to contribute to this important conversation was incredibly rewarding," said Keith Connell. "What made this project especially meaningful was the chance to collaborate with my wife, Suzanne. We were able to combine our perspectives, challenge each other's thinking, and produce work that reflects both our shared commitment to student success and our individual experiences in education. Working together on this chapter was one of the most fulfilling scholarly experiences of my career."

Suzanne M. Connell reflected on the collaborative nature of the project and the significance of the topic.

"This chapter was the result of many conversations, countless revisions, and a shared passion for supporting students and improving educational experiences," said Suzanne Connell. "The process reminded me that meaningful scholarship often emerges through collaboration. Working alongside Keith allowed us to bring together different perspectives while remaining focused on a common goal: understanding how institutions can better support international students during a period of significant change in higher education."

The publication arrives at a pivotal moment for Canadian post-secondary education as institutions adapt to changing immigration policies, shifting enrolment patterns, and growing expectations for student support and academic success. The chapter emphasizes that international student success should not be viewed solely as an outcome of recruitment efforts, but as a shared institutional responsibility requiring sustained investment, inclusive teaching practices, and comprehensive support systems.

International Student Engagement in Post-Secondary Education brings together scholars from around the world to explore contemporary issues affecting international learners and the institutions that serve them. The volume contributes to the growing body of research focused on improving student engagement, belonging, persistence, and success in higher education.
